Love Your Alley!

About the 2013 Second Annual "Love Your Alley" Project:

One of the consistent concerns we took away from the 2012 Bexley Community Survey involved messy, unkempt alleyways.  Code enforcement is one way to tackle this problem, but we thought it would be fun to offer some positive incentive to pamper your alleys.

On Saturday, September 28th, 2013 a panel of judges will travel Bexley’s alleys and award a prize for the best alley block, as well as a best individual property prize.

We have goodies lined up through generous donations from our partners.  Partners Include:

Yard Barbers, Bexley Pizza Plus, Johnson's Real Ice Cream, DeMonye's Greenhouse, Roll:, Lang Stone, and Bexley Coffee Shop

So what are our judges looking for?  They're looking for clean, well-kept alley frontages; organized trash receptacles that have their lids on; no weeds; trees and bushes that are trimmed back so as not to impede visibility or traffic down the alley; paint that isn't peeling or chipping; well-kept fences and retaining walls; and, as a bonus, attractive landscaping.  Judges will be walking the alleys on September 28, and winners will be announced on Monday, September 30th!

Thank you for helping us keep Bexley beautiful!

2013 LoveYourAlley Contest Winners:

Best Alley "Block": Alley Between Vernon and Roosevelt, north of Charles, and south of the mid-block (between Charles and Astor) alley crossing
This alley caught our eye because there was a nice inertia of well-maintained properties back-to-back, and while there were some alley frontages that were a little rough around the edges, they were clearly being worked on and getting some extra attention.  It's clear that there is a culture of alley attentiveness building at Vernon/Roosevelt and Charles, and that's what this contest is all about.  As a prize, this alley wins a catered block party, with steaming hot pizzas from Bexley Pizza Plus and ice cream from Johnson's Real Ice Cream.  Thanks to Bexley Pizza Plus and Johnson's for sponsoring this part of the competition!

Best Individual Alley Property: 2601 Bexley Park
We were happy to see a range of well-maintained alley properties throughout the City.  This one sparkles, with meticulously maintained landscaping hedging the alley frontage, and a wonderful cobblestone drive off of the alley accessing the garage.  This property embraces its alley frontage and is a delight to all who pass by.  Congratulations to Ray Lewis and Matt Condon - well done!  Their Bexley swag bag includes prizes from Yard Barbers ($200 coupon), Lang Stone ($100 gift certificate), deMonye's Greenhouse ($25 giftcard), Roll: ($ gift card and a t-shirt), Jimmy John's ($20 gift certificate), and the Bexley Coffee Shop ($10 gift card and a t-shirt).

2012 LoveYourAlley Contest Winners:

Best Alley "Block": Alley Between Brentwood and Bexley Park on the north and south, and Cassady and Dawson on the east and west
This alley stuck out because of consistently maintained alley landscaping, tidy trash cans, well-painted garages and outbuildings, and an overall high level of property maintenance.  As a prize, this alley wins a catered block party, with steaming hot pizzas from Bexley Pizza Plus and ice cream from Johnson's Ice Cream.  Thanks to Bexley Pizza Plus and Johnson's for sponsoring this part of the competition!

Best Individual Alley Property: 706 South Roosevelt Avenue
We were happy to see a range of well-maintained alley properties throughout the City.  This one rose to the top because the landscaping installed on this impeccably maintained property was intentionally alley-facing - like a gift to its alley neighbors.  Congratulations to the Schuligers - well done!  Their Bexley swag bag includes prizes from Yard Barbers ($200 coupon), deMonye's Greenhouse ($50 giftcard), Roll: ($55 gift card and a t-shirt), Spoon Me ($10 gift card and a t-shirt), She She Botique ($25 gift certificate), and the Bexley Coffee Shop ($20 gift card).
