Steve Keyes, JD was elected to City Council in November 2011, and is excited and honored to be serving the residents of Bexley in this capacity. By day, Steve works as a Human Resources executive at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, based in downtown Columbus. He received his Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Psychology from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; his Master’s Degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and his law degree cum laude from Fordham University School of Law in New York City, where he served as Editor-In-Chief of the Fordham Law Review. His prior corporate and legal experience includes roles at Limited Brands, Inc.; Time Warner Inc.; American Express Co.; and the New York law firm of Proskauer Rose LLP.
Steve also values the other leadership roles he plays in the Bexley and Columbus communities, which include Adjunct Professor at Capital University’s School of Management and Leadership; 2011-12 Co-Chair of the Annual Giving Campaign at Columbus School for Girls; Chair of the Financial Stability Committee of the United Way of Central Ohio; Executive Committee Member of the Board of Trustees of Columbus’s ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and Chair of ProMusica’s Strategic Planning Committee; and Co-Founder of the Annual “Columbus A Cappella Fest!” Vocal Festival, which premiered in Bexley in 2010.
Steve started his governmental service to Bexley as a member of the City’s Charter Review Commission from 2009-2011, which confirmed his strong interest in public service and his decision to seek election to City Council. Steve lives in North Bexley with his wife Lauren Bonfield, also an attorney, and daughter Natalie, a 7th grader at Columbus School for Girls. As a family, they enjoy hiking, biking, reading, movies, swimming, and travelling. Steve and Natalie also enjoy performing as musicians – she as a young cellist, and he as a singer with a long-standing professional vocal quartet known as The GrooveBarbers, as well as with the Capital University Choral Union. Steve was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where his mother and brother still live.
