MAYOR'S MUSINGS
Several things are going on in our great community. Major street repairs continue throughout the city. We are federally mandated to install handicap ramps on all streets that we are resurfacing, plus we have received grant monies for installation on Cassady, College, Broad St. and Main St. We are also working around all three school complexes, so please pardon our dust!
__________________________________________________________________
We have started preliminary work on Fair Ave. which will be getting a complete rebuild beginning July 5th.
We will begin replacing sidewalks on College Avenue from Main to Livingston. College Avenue will be closed to through traffic during work hours.
STREET AND SIDEWALK WORK IN BEXLEY
Some residents may lose access to their driveways due to the nature of the work. If necessary, you may park on Astor Avenue or Charles Street. Also, Capital University has graciously offered the use of their parking lots during this time. If you want to use a Capital University parking lot, all you need to do is show identification indicating you live on College Avenue to the Capital University Public Safety Building located at 661 College Avenue. They will provide you with a temporary parking permit so you may use their parking lots. Thank you for your patience. We will try to complete this project as quickly as possible.
IMPORTANT HOLIDAY DATES:
* Labor Day Block Party - Sunday, September 5th
* Trick or Treat night - October 28th
These dates will help you in your long-range planning for 2010.

City of Bexley - Average Property Prices |
|
|
|
The Columbus Dispatch, Sunday, March 28, 2010 published an article titled, "What's Your House Worth?", by Jim Weiker. This article refers to the recent slump in housing values during the past four years. According to the article, "The healthiest regions tended to be well-established inner-ring neighborhoods such as Bexley, Clintonville, Upper Arlington and parts of the West and Northwest sides." It's possible to find homes in Bexley - unlike in many other communities - that sold for more during the past 12 months than during the boom."

State of the City Address
Mayor John M. Brennan
March 16, 2010
The State of the City in Bexley continues on a good course, we continue to work with the schools, the Bexley Chamber of Commerce, the Bexley Celebrations Association and all of the various commissions. These groups provide many volunteers who work hundreds of hours to help with a variety of programs that serve the City. I would like to personally thank all of those who serve.
The year 2009 saw many positives including several streets that were resurfaced and waterlines repaired. A comprehensive parking study was completed by volunteer resident, Eloise Buker Ph.D. which helped create 180 lined parking places on Main Street. We also did some minor tweaking of various parking areas along with a re-appraisal of Capital University and south Bexley parking issues.
The Bexley Tree Commission, led by Susan Quintenz, kept up their good work with several new end caps and entrances to our fine city. One that stands out is the gateway coming into the City from the Livingston Avenue, College Avenue corridor. This was achieved with help from Speedway, Monro Muffler and Capital University who all contributed monies to help accomplish this work.
The Whitehall Bexley Rotary honored Ruby Arnold as the "City Employee of the Year"; Mark Moore was honored as the "Service Employee of the Year" and Don Brosius was selected as the recipient of "The Mayor’s Appreciation" award.
The year 2009 also saw a few more staff reductions along with a lean 2009 appropriation. For two years in a row, we as a city administration have come in under budget. It is my goal, as always and for 2010 to keep up the fiscally conservative spending and again stay under budget and look for ways for additional savings.
The shining star of all the good work in 2009 was the completion and opening of the Bexley Police Facility. Finally after 10 years of discussion, we were able to get this project on track and completed. I would like to personally thank council members and all of the other individuals who helped make this project a reality. It is truly a crowning jewel for our community and has been very well received by our residents.
In closing, I will pledge that we will continue to work hard and be prudent managers of our taxpayers’ dollars and strive to keep Bexley the best place to live in central Ohio. Now I will ask the various department heads and our police chief to highlight some of their accomplishments from last year.
Thank you and God Bless.

Bexley Achieves High Mark Among Small Towns, Cities |

Bexley News, February 10, 2010 Volume 25, No. 44, written by Laura Englehart
"Bexley received a five-star rating in the annual statistical handbook America's Top-Rated Small Towns & Cities, released this year. The two-volume book pulls together profiles of 8,908 places in the United States with populations between 3,000 and 25,000. It lists statistical details such as population, income, housing and education, among others."
"Only 40 of 331 places in Ohio, including Bexley, are rated with five starts in the edition. The book shows Bexley ranks highest when compared to other places in education. About 97 percent of residents have earned a high school diploma, the 11th highest of 331 Ohio places profiled. Two-thirds of residents have a bachelor's degree or higher, and 31.8 percent of residents have a master's degree or higher. The city's student-teacher ratio is 14.8:1, which put it at 206 of 233 where the higher the ranking number, the better. " |
